Project Description

Client – Bluestone

Bluestone and Firehouse Factory Unit

As a manufacturer of kitchen worktops and bespoke surfaces in Kendal, Bluestone & Firehouse has grown from a predominantly Northern manufacturer to a National supplier. Rebranded in November 2016, this coincides with the completion of their new bespoke offices and manufacturing facility designed by Ben Cunliffe Architects.

During the course of 2015/2016 Ben accompanied Tom Grandison, Bluestone’s managing director, on several visits to evaluate existing commercial buildings and various development plots. The evaluations included location, size and cost. Although out of town plots had some advantages Bluestone were keen to have a showroom in town with office presence. Eventually we developed a scheme and negotiated a plot on the Beezon Industrial Estate with good transport links, town presence and commanding views over the River Kent. In this prominent location discussions with SLDC planning authority led to an agreement that this sizeable building would be acceptable with high quality external finishes. Kingspan profiled cladding, a large canopy and traditional stone cladding achieved this. The new unit has been built to a high environmental standard with low UValue envelope, manufacturing water recycling and low electricity consumption lighting and appliances.
