Crosthwaite School

Crosthwaite School is blossoming rural school serving the Parishes of Crosthwaite, Winster, Underbarrow, Brigsteer and Cartmel Fell. Pupil numbers are increasing year on year and as a result teaching space was at a premium and a new classroom was required urgently. The School had planning permission for an external classroom ‘pod’ which required funds of £250,000. Unfortunately, no public funding was available for this venture so Ben Cunliffe Architects donated their design team and produced a clever room in roof scheme in an attempt to keep costs for the school to a minimum. The result is a new light and bright classroom in the roof space of the existing Victorian School House, an intervention room and new library. Staff and pupils are delighted with the new addition to the school which was delivered by Paul Hudson and Mace Construction and school volunteers for £36,000. What can be achieved by a community, the Land Owners Association and the Parish with the drive of its headmaster, Mathew Jessop, and parents was truly a delight to behold.
